Infomedian Arena: Snakes and Ladders Workshop

with Nolwenn Kerzreho, IXIASOFT Technical Account Manager and Joe Gollner, Managing Director, Gnostyx Research, Inc.

Date: Tuesday, November 10
Time: 8:45 - 10:30

More details available in the InfoMedian mobile app

This condensed workshop looks at how the game Snakes & Ladders can be used to prepare a roadmap for enabling SME collaboration. The basic idea is that people can use this popular children’s game as a way to brainstorm with their colleagues about the risks that threaten their project (Snakes) and the tactics that they can deploy to achieve their goals (Ladders). As more and more people play the game and share information about the Snakes and Ladders that they encounter, the better the game becomes! Participants will be invited to contribute their favorite Snakes & Ladders so everyone will take away new ideas about how to tackle some of the hardest parts of the planning process for SME collaboration.

Audience Benefits: The audience will learn about project tricks that have worked for others (Ladders) or about traps that have proven problematic or even fatal for others (Snakes). Attendees will also learn about how using a game can be a way to help project managers engage with stakeholders and how this gamification gets people thinking about the right things to prepare a high level project plan (a roadmap).

Integrating Processes and Workflows in DITA

by Keith Schengili-Roberts, IXIASOFT DITA Information Architect

Date: Tuesday, November 10
Time: 14:45

Description: DITA XML is used by companies around the world to deliver user-focused documentation more efficiently. But this is only half the story, as firms achieve further efficiency by integrating it into an improved workflow. Better communication with Subject Matter Experts, validating content against regulatory processes, and integration with localization tools are some of the ways DITA can improve documentation processes. Keith Schengili-Roberts (DITA Information Architect for IXIASOFT, and “DITAWriter”) looks at how DITA is used to improve content production across a variety of industry sectors.

XML Revolution in the NLS Office

by Chantal Moucouveia, NLS Project Manager, Varian Medical Systems

Date: Wednesday, November 11
Time: 12:15pm

The localization office at Varian Medical System has undergone a fundamental development since the company's tech pubs group decided to move from FrameMaker to DITA XML a couple of years ago. Far from being just a format change, the switch to XML and a DITA content management system has in many ways revolutionized the roles and responsibilities of the localization project managers. Quality, efficiency and leverage are seen with completely different eyes today. But not everything is rosy; the change also poses major challenges...

Branch and Merge: a Content Manager’s Dream or a Tech Writer’s Nightmare?

by Jean-François Ameye, IXIASOFT Solutions Architect and Tristan Mitchell, DeltaXML Solutions Architect

Date: Wednesday, November 11
Time: 17:15

Description: Branch and merge may be a software developer’s dream, but using this technique with structured documents can turn into a nightmare. The merge process is so often a manual one: cut and paste and get frustrated. Can structured XML merge turn the nightmare back into a dream?

Tristan and Jean-François look at some of the joys and the pains behind the merging of documents. Starting with an overview of release management, they move on to demonstrate in a case study how XML merge tools can solve major issues in content management, speeding up document production by automating the merge process.
